Autumn Traffic Lights

The little burn by our cottage is partially overhung by a mix of deciduous trees. The harsh sunlight of a crystal sharp autumn morning was diffusing through the beautifully coloured leaves, casting a rich golden light onto the water near the banks. In contrast, the centre of the stream was unlit, and so reflected the rich blue sky above — it was a beautiful contrast of colour. I selected as long a shutter speed as possible, to remove as much detail as possible from the water’s surface and concentrate solely on the colour of the light. The fortuitous discovery of a rock with three differently coloured leaves solidified the composition.

Photographs like this, with a long exposure of a water course (greater than 1 minute in this instance), seem to polarise opinion. Some people love it, others really can’t stand the effect. Personally, I feel it tends to be much overused, but can have its place — and for me this was one such occasion.
