Bowfiddle Rock Midsummer Sunset,
Portknockie, Moray

After a long day of commercial photography in Buckie, on the Moray coast beyond Elgin, I ate a good portion of fish and chips and decided to investigate the stretch of coastline around Portknockie as a bit of light relief before the long journey home. The evening light over the Bowfiddle Rock, covered in nesting kittiwakes, was beautiful, and I decided to hang around for sunset. However, about 20 minutes before the expected light show, a bank of cloud drew the curtains over the scene. I was gutted, especially after a long wait — so decided to hang around a while longer, "just in case". Luckily, it was one of those occasions when Heinz ketchup’s old catchphrase came true — good things came (a rich pastel-pink afterglow) to those who wait (me).
